Open VC – probably the closest you’d get to the equivalent of a VC Wikipedia!

My Key Takeaways

A lot of time is wasted when startups reach out to a investor for a round that is in the wrong industry, stage, or ticket size.

Some of the VCs’ information can be found online but details like ticket size might be less obvious.

  • Based on their website FAQ “OpenVC is an open resource (think Wikipedia) where VCs can claim their investment thesis. By doing so, VCs receive less spam from clueless founders. They also drive highly-qualified deal flow.”
  • I tried the platform myself and like that OpenVC verifies entries’ information themselves and also indicate clearly information which are crowdsourced and not 100% reliable.
  • You can filter VC entries by countries of investments, investment stage and first cheque.
  • I also appreciate the transparency where a VC listing states whether it is agreeable to cold calls or prefers intros to save founders’ time in pitching.
  • The platform is of course not 100% comprehensive as there are well-known SEA VCs and funds like Temasek, Open Space, Golden Gate Ventures, EDBI Pte Ltd which are not featured (yet).
  • Another feature which I thought could be helpful could be to filter the VCs/investors based on their Global HQ or physical presence. Just because you invest in startups in #Singapore (SG) and #SoutheastAsia SEA doesn’t mean your networks there are amazing and that you can add value to your portfolio startup in these geographies.

Though not complete for SEA, I still think that it’s a great complement to other SEA/SG-focused databases like StartupSG.

Hope this helps founders and their startups to find more SEA/SG investors to accelerate their entry into our growing region.

SEA’s tech scene is around ~10 years behind China [Asia Partners], so don’t miss the boat this time.
